Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a Babri Masjid–modelled mosque in Rejinagar, Murshidabad, triggering major political tension in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The ceremony took place on December 6, the anniversary of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition, under tight security involving state police, RAF and central forces.
While the public stage was set up separately, the actual construction site lies nearly one kilometre away.
Thousands of supporters gathered, chanting “Nara-e-Takbeer, Allahu Akbar”, with many carrying bricks as symbolic offerings. Several Islamic scholars, including clerics from Saudi Arabia, were present.
Kabir — suspended by the TMC for “communal politics” — remained firm:
“Building a mosque is my constitutional right. The Babri Masjid will be built at any cost.”
He claimed the project is financially backed with ₹80 crore pledged by a private industrialist, and the full complex — spread over 25 bighas — will include a hospital, medical college, university, hotel and helipad worth ₹300 crore.
The event sparked strong political reactions.
The BJP accused TMC of silent support to polarisation.
The TMC clarified that Kabir is suspended and acting independently.
A PIL seeking to stop the ceremony was rejected on Friday by the Calcutta High Court, which directed the state to maintain peace. Both state and Centre confirmed that sufficient forces were deployed.
